What Neurontin is used for

Neurontin is commonly prescribed to control epilepsy. Epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent repeated seizures (fits). These seizures are transient symptoms of synchronous or excessive neural activity in the brain.

Neurontin is also prescribed to treat neuropathic pain, which is caused by damage to the nervous system.

It does not matter if you take Neurontin with or without food.

If you forget to take Neurontin and it is less than four hours for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and then go back to your normal schedule. If it is more than four hours for your next dose, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to your normal schedule. Taking a double dose may increase the chance of you getting harmful side effects. If you are not sure what to do, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

If you have trouble remembering to take Neurontin, ask your health care provider for some hints.

How long to take Neurontin

Continue taking Neurontin for as long as recommended by your health care provider. Remember, Neurontin helps control your epilepsy, but does not cure it. For that reason you must take Neurontin every day, even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Neurontin unless your health care provider tells you to.

If you take too much (overdose)

Immediately call Emergency at your nearest hospital or your health care provider if you think that you may have taken too much Neurontin. Do this even if there are no signs of poisoning or discomfort. You may need crucial medical attention.

If you take too much Neurontin, you may feel weak, unsteady when walking, drowsy; have slurred speech, double vision or diarrhea.

Neurontin Side effects

If you do not feel well while you are taking Neurontin, alert your health care provider or pharmacist asap.

Neurontin helps most people to control epilepsy or neuropathic pain, but, as most other medicines, it may have also unwanted side effects. Sometimes they are harmful, but most of the time they are not.

You may need medical attention if you get some of Neurontin side effects. If you are over 65 years old, the risk of getting side effects rises.

Ask your health care provider to answer any questions you may have.

Even if you get any side effects, you should not stop taking Neurontin, unless your health care provider recommends you to.

Tell your health care provider if you feel any of the following side effects and they worry you:

dizziness or light-headedness
feeling tired or drowsy
unfriendliness
unusually overactive
forgetfulness, loss of concentration or confusion
difficulty speaking
changes in your weight
constipation, diarrhoea
nausea and/or vomiting, indigestion
dry mouth, red swollen gums
muscle pain or cramps, back pain
swelling of the hands or feet
runny or blocked nose
fever
bronchitis, lung infection
sore throat and discomfort when swallowing, coughing.

Tell your health care provider if you notice any of the following side effects, as soon as possible:

weakness, unsteadiness when walking, reduced co-ordination or slowed reactions
unusual changes in mood* or behaviour such as restlessness, nervousness, or excitement
signs of new or increased irritability or agitation
signs of depression
seeing or hearing things that are not there, irrational thinking
blurred or double vision, uncontrollable jerky eye movements, difficulty seeing
signs of frequent infections such as fever, severe chills, sore throat or mouth ulcers.

Tell your health care provider immediately or go to your nearest hospital if you feel any of the following side effects:

more frequent or more severe seizures (fits)
chest pain, a very fast heart rate
sudden signs of allergy such as rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing.

These are very harmful side effects and you may need critical medical care or hospitalisation. But they are very rare. You should tell your health care provider if you notice any other side effects that are making you feel unhealthy.

Do not be anxious by this list of possible side effects, because you, probable, will not notice any of them.
